“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see the good that you do and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

Year 5 & 6 Beacon Project with Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service

Selected children from Year 5 and Year 6 today concluded an exciting six-week programme, the Primary Beacon Project, in partnership with the Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service (MFRS). Designed to provide safe, fun, and enriching experiences, the course develops key life skills such as resilience, teamwork, patience, communication, and confidence, while giving children hands-on insight into fire service work.

The Beacon Project aims to promote personal development, leadership, self-discipline, and social responsibility, helping pupils grow both academically and personally. The project, which ran every Monday for 6 weeks, included a wide range of practical and interactive activities, all fully risk-assessed. Pupils took part in fire drills, using hoses and youth breathing apparatus, hydrant and foam-making exercises, and search-and-rescue techniques. They also engaged in team building and communication tasks, first aid, road and water safety and community safety awareness, including fire escape planning and bonfire safety.

The programme concluded today with a special passing-out parade, in which families were invited to witness our children showcase everything they had learnt. Highlights included completing a physical fire drill and safely rescuing Mrs L McCormick, demonstrating both courage and teamwork. Pupils also received certificates of completion and first aid, marking their achievements over the six weeks.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 5 and 6 pupils for embracing every challenge with enthusiasm and determination. A heartfelt thank you to Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service for providing such an amazing and inspiring experience for our pupils and families. The skills, confidence, and memories gained through this programme will stay with our children for years to come.
