Mastering Number Programme
Mastering Number Reception - Y2 Programme

We use the Mastering Number programme to help children develop strong number sense, mental maths fluency, and confidence in mathematics. This government-backed, research-based programme is designed for children in Reception through Year 2 and focusses on the essential foundations of maths: addition, subtraction, number bonds, and counting fluency.
The programme consists of short, daily sessions where children engage in carefully structured activities to practise key number skills. These include:
-
Exploring number relationships and patterns
-
Learning and recalling number facts quickly
-
Applying mental strategies to solve problems efficiently
-
Developing confidence and independence in calculations
By building a strong understanding of numbers at an early stage, children become more confident and capable mathematicians, ready to tackle more complex concepts in later years. Mastering Number not only improves speed and accuracy with calculations but also encourages children to think mathematically, reason logically, and enjoy exploring numbers.
Parents can support their child at home by encouraging quick, daily practice with number facts and by talking about numbers in everyday situations, such as cooking, shopping, or measuring.

Mastering Number KS2 Programme
At St Sebastian’s, we use the Mastering Number programme to strengthen pupils’ fluency and confidence in mathematics. Originally designed for Reception to Year 2, the principles of Mastering Number continue into Key Stage 2, supporting children to develop mental calculation strategies, number sense and a deep understanding of number relationships.
The programme focuses on building confidence, accuracy, and speed with calculations, helping pupils tackle more complex problems with ease. By embedding these core skills, we ensure every child is confident, resilient, and prepared for all areas of the maths curriculum.
