Travelling Home Alone
"Safety and security don't just happen; they are the result of collective consensus and public investment."
At St Sebastian’s Catholic Primary School & Nursery, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. In line with Keeping Children Safe in Education, we are committed to ensuring that every child feels safe, supported and protected both in school and on their journey to | from school.
We aim to promote pupils’ independence as much as possible, teaching them how to make safe & sensible choices. We recognise that, as pupils become older, parents or carers may wish for their children to be able to travel to and from school independently. Parents or carers are able to seek permission for children in Y5 and Y6 to travel to and from school alone.
Working together with families, we ensure that every child knows how to stay safe, who to turn to for help and that their wellbeing is our highest priority. With this in mind, we have created this policy to clarify the procedures in place to ensure that all pupils can travel safely.

NSPCC Advice : Home or Out Alone
As children grow older, they are likely to begin to stay at home without you and go out alone, including travelling to and from school independently.
- Do you think they are old enough?
- Can they deal with risks?
- Will they behave responsibly?
To help parents/carers to decide whether their child is ready for these steps and with advice about how to keep your child safe, the NSPCC has produced a guide with useful questions and information.
